Doctor Olarn's opinion |
Here is the advice of Doctor Olarn. To be more precise, after having read different opinions about the prophilaxis against malaria, I wrote to him to know is last opinion on the matter. I am a UK trained paediatrician and am not an expert on malaria, but I consulted a colleague who knows about these things and basically what she said was it is nor useful to take malarial prophylaxis for visiting Thailand as the malaria here is resistant to most drugs. There is a drug- doxycycline, which would be an effective antimalarial prophylaxics for those who need it, but the side effects are so severe and unpleasant that nobody would really want to take it just to go on vacation. This is the drug that US doctors often advise officially to travellers who inquire, but Thai doctors mostly say it's not worth taking anything. |
